COMPLETION

December 2025

Winvic Construction appointed JSJ to deliver the full Section 278 package to Willen Road, the A422 and H3 Monks Way in Newport Pagnell. The scope brought together site clearance, earthworks, drainage, kerbing, road and footpath construction, street lighting, traffic signalling and extensive service ducting and utility works, plus a rising main routed through an existing farm and bored beneath the road.

The project ran from April 2024 to December 2025. JSJ’s role was primarily labour and plant, with most materials supplied by Winvic, and required a dedicated task force of skilled operators and supervisors coordinating multiple work fronts across a 20-month programme.

SCOPE OF WORKS

Site Clearance and Earthworks

  • Removal of hedges, trees, kerbs and existing road construction
  • Demolition of old concrete roads, topsoil strip and muck shift
  • Over 13,000m³ excavated and filled, 7,000m³ removed off site
  • Temporary haul roads and topsoiling of completed areas

Drainage and Highway Construction

  • Over 5,000m of new storm, ACO and subgrade drainage
  • Over 8,000m of new kerbs and edgings
  • Road formation and profiling, stoned ready for surfacing
  • Footpath construction and roundabout installation

Utilities and Service Diversions

  • Over 5,000m of new service ducting and new water main
  • Diversions to existing services and overhead power cables
  • Vacuum excavation and concrete capping to protect a live water main
  • Street lighting and traffic signalling works

Rising Main

  • Open-trench excavation through an existing farm
  • Air valve, washout and joint chambers
  • Joint pits to bore the main beneath the existing road
  • Sequenced alongside the wider highway programme

THE CHALLENGE

The works sat on a busy roundabout serving Newport Pagnell and Milton Keynes, with heavy traffic flows, local residents, road closures and restricted access for materials all shaping how each phase could be planned. The challenge was never just widening the road.

Overhead power cables, underground services, live water mains and old concrete roads all had to be worked around safely, with night-shift working and traffic management adding further coordination demands across a long programme that moved from clearance through drainage, utilities and road construction.

THE RESULT

JSJ delivered the full Section 278 programme on time and with the accuracy the works demanded. Over 17,000m² of site was cleared, 12,000m² of road profiled and over 6,500m² of footpath constructed, all while keeping a major route open and existing services protected.

The completed package demonstrates JSJ’s capability to deliver extensive highway and infrastructure works for a tier one contractor, across multiple work streams, in a live environment and to a time-critical programme.
